In construction industry every company has one or multiple yards where they store all the machineries and stocks all consumable items. Each site send their requirement to the yard and the plant manager issues different items on hire to the sites based on requirement. Plant managers then assigns drivers to deliver and collect items from the sites. Plant managers then sends charges to the sites on the agreed time intervals. Most challanging task is to track all these process in a cost effective way .

Requirement
Client wanted to develop a cross-platform web based solution which would automate the above processes. The only software required on a PC for accessing the system would be a standard browser. It needed to be cost effective to the end client. Below are the specific requirements -

1. The system needs to be seamlessly integrate with third party products such as – MS Excel, MS Word, MS Power Point, e-mail, fax, Adobe PDF and JPEG format.

2. System should be able to exchange data in XML format if the Schema or DTD are provided.

3. For any screen which list transactions, there should be an excel button which once pressed will seamlessly transform the whole transaction to excel sheet.

4. All reports should be provided in a printer friendly version and option should be there to seamlessly generate a MS Excel, Adobe PDF and MS Word version of the report.

5. Proper audit trail of all the transactions.

Solution

e-Celtic proposed and implemented a cost effective LAMP architecture where end user doesn’t need to pay any license fee for the required software. It took us total 35 person months to develop the application.

All the modules were developed in MVC architecture. This application was deployed on Apache on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Client side validation was done using JavaScript & Ajax. Business layer was implemented using PHP classes. PHP Pear class provides a layer between the application and database thereby providing database independence. Database of the application can be changed from MySQL to Oracle/MS-SQL Server/MS-Access/PostGre SQL with very little changes.
